When basketball was first created in 1891, players used soccer balls to play. Now when we think of basketball, we picture an orange ball with black lines running through it. The improvements that caused the creation of what we now think of as a basketball were all based on science and scientific principles such as Newton’s Laws of Motion, air pressure, and friction. Using science, engineers were able to make a ball that could bounce well and be easier for players to grip, making it ideal for the game of basketball. Source

Almost every aspect of basketball has been advanced and improved since the game was first invented; the ball was changed, rules were added, new equipment was created, technology was made to enhance certain aspects of the game, and more. The science of physics, math, and the law of motion are the underlying factors that contributed to these developments over time. Furthermore, as basketball became more widespread, statistics and technology became more relevant and important. Technology is used to keep track of statistics and help coaches and players improve their offensive and defensive strategies. It has also contributed to making basketball a more individualized, faster paced game. Source
Mathematics and physics are hidden in plain sight all throughout the game of basketball. For example, sometimes when you are watching a player jump, as they take a shot they appear to be floating in the air for a couple of seconds before going back down again. This is due to the fact that when you jump, seventy-one percent of your time during the jump is spent in the top half of the jump. Furthermore, though a shot that misses the basket may appear to have missed it by chance, there are actually concrete scientific factors that caused it to. Experience: He has experience working with autistic children and loves teaching them concepts in math, in addition to basic coding. He currently works for a company called Code Ninjas, and teaches kids ages 7 to 10 how to code. He specializes in teaching Scratch, Minecraft Scripting, and JavaScript. His strengths lie in computer science, math, and science. He would love to be your Brogrammer, Number Ninja and/or Alchemy Master.

Experience: She has two years of experience volunteering at a summer camp, and took care of about 15 kids, primarily working with 4 to 13 year old girls. Her goal was to make sure that the kids had a fun and to ensure their safety. She has also been a sitter for a few children in her neighborhood and loves taking care of kids.

Hours: Saturday and Sunday mornings                     Some weekday evenings 
Experience: For the past 23 years, she’s tutored kids of all ages in a variety of subjects. She is also a proud mom to two kids, ages 19 and 12. She has provided foster respite care to kids ages 5-8. For 3 years, she was a reading buddy for 2nd-5th graders.

             9am  - 11am Friday
Experience: She has been passionate about working with children from a very young age, and started volunteering in her freshman year of high school as a biomedical instructor, teaching children from low-income neighborhoods. During her time as a volunteer, she was able to educate through many different health experiments and teach not only what goes on in the body, but why it is important. As she got more involved, she began creating lesson plans to better engage the children. She also just recently started her own children's day camp where she is able to work with children outside of a classroom setting, teaching them important values through different activities that require communication and teamwork.

Experience: Kalyssa has younger siblings, so she grew up watching them, and coaches younger teams.
Vernon - Brogrammer
Hours: 9am - 5pm Daily 
Experience: Vernon has worked within all grade levels, helping students in reading, math, science, and language arts. He also worked in Japan as an English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher for the local high school and college. He’s extremely passionate about creating a learning environment that allows your students to flourish and become the brightest stars they can be.

Vineeta - Chief of Biscuit Dunking, Alchemy Master

Hours: Monday-Sunday

Experience: Vineeta, or as some call her, Vin, has an MBA in marketing and worked in corporate for about 8 years, but took a break to take care of her 2 wonderful kids, who are now in middle school. Her goal with kids is to make sure they have fun while staying safe. She has tutored both of her kids and looks forward to helping your kids reach their academic goals or keep them occupied while you work. She has previous experience as a sitter and has tutored elementary kids in a variety of subjects.
Our Virtual Sitters and Tutors are science experts and gifted scholars who have either taught science, work in that profession or are honors students. Science categories include conducting cool science experiments, cooking your child's favorite foods and coding exercises for programs such as Minecraft.
